NEW YORK PAYCHECK GUIDE

How Paycheck Taxes Work in New York (2026)

New York State Income Tax on Your Paycheck

New York employers withhold state income tax from every paycheck based on the state's Up to 10.9% state + NYC adds 3.876% local. This withholding is separate from your federal income tax and is paid directly to the New York Department of Revenue. The state tax is calculated on your taxable income — your gross wages minus pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and the standard deduction. For a New York worker earning $75,000, the annual state income tax is approximately $6,420.

Federal Income Tax for New York Workers

Regardless of which state you live in, all US workers pay the same federal income taxes using the 2026 progressive brackets. For New York residents, federal income tax is calculated on taxable income after the standard deduction of $16,100 (single) or $32,200 (married filing jointly). The 2026 federal brackets range from 10% on the first $11,925 of taxable income up to 37% on income above $626,350. Most New York workers fall into the 12% or 22% federal bracket. A single New York resident earning $75,000 pays approximately $9,424 in federal income tax.

Social Security and Medicare (FICA) in New York

FICA taxes are the same in New York as everywhere in the US. Your employer withholds 6.2% of your gross wages for Social Security (up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500) and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages. This 7.65% combined FICA rate applies regardless of your state — so New York workers pay the same FICA as workers in California or Texas. On a $75,000 salary, FICA totals $5,738 per year ($478/month). Your employer pays an equal 7.65% on top of your wages, bringing the total FICA contribution to 15.3%.

Reduce Your New York Tax Bill with Pre-Tax Deductions

Contributing to a 401(k) or other pre-tax retirement account reduces your taxable income for both federal and New York state income tax. In 2026, you can contribute up to $24,500 to your 401(k) ($32,500 if age 50 or older). Every dollar you contribute reduces your federal taxable income by one dollar — saving both federal and New York state income taxes. Health insurance premiums paid through your employer are also typically pre-tax, reducing your federal, New York state, and FICA taxes simultaneously.

How Pay Frequency Affects Your New York Paycheck

Your gross annual salary divided by the number of pay periods gives your gross per-paycheck amount. The most common pay frequencies in New York are bi-weekly (26 paychecks per year) and semi-monthly (24 paychecks). Bi-weekly employees receive an extra "third paycheck" in two months each year since 52 weeks ÷ 2 = 26 paychecks. Tax withholding is calculated per paycheck, so your per-check withholding depends on your pay frequency. Our New York paycheck calculator above handles all pay frequencies — just select yours from the dropdown to see your exact take-home for each pay period.

Your W-4 Form and New York Withholding

Your W-4 form tells your New York employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. The 2020 redesigned W-4 eliminates withholding allowances and instead uses dollar amounts for deductions and other income. Most employees should use the standard withholding, but if you have significant investment income, a side business, or multiple jobs, you may need to adjust. New York may have its own state withholding form in addition to the federal W-4. Our paycheck calculator estimates withholding based on the 2026 IRS percentage method.
